What is your LOVE LINGO?

Okay, I know. What does love lingo have to do with health, nutrition, and fitness?  This might be outside the realm of your usual Healthy Bite, but in the spirit of the holiday, I am just so excited about sharing the concept of Love Lingo with you.

It all started a few weeks ago when I was taking a walk with a colleague. I was telling her that I was looking forward to having dinner with an old friend.  BUT she cancelled on me, and I was so disappointed. She said that she changed her mind and wanted to hang at home.

My wise colleague wisely explained to me that my love language is QUALITY TIME. That means that I appreciate time with the people I care about and connecting conversation.  My friend’s love language is ACTS OF SERVICE-she likes to do things for people, like help them move into their apartments or bring them dinner.  When it doesn’t appear to be an act of service, she feels like time spent with someone is not as important.

I couldn’t believe how accurate my colleague’s interpretation was, especially after I talked about it with my friend. It has really helped up communicate better.

It also made me remember a friend from college whose parents would send her gifts each semester.  To this day, she still brings us gifts when we see her.  AND she never forgets birthdays, anniversaries or even the birthdays of my children.  Her love language is clearly GIFTS.

One of my clients told me the other day that she was so relieved to finally learn the love languages.  It has helped her understand why her mother never seemed to notice how often she cooked dinner for her or helped her with the house.  Her mother only noticed when she came over and sat with her.  Clearly her mother’s love language is QUALITY OF TIME  and the daughter’s is ACTS OF SERVICE.

I have a cousin whose love language is WORDS OF AFFIRMATION, which are kind and encouraging words.  It was constantly frustrating for her to not get positive feedback from her significant other.  When she finally was able to explain what she needed, life got easier.

There are five love languages:  Quality of Time, Acts of  Service, Physical Touch, Gifts, and Words of Affirmation.  Check out the book, Love Languages by Gary Chapman to find out more (and even take an assessment to find out your own love lingo).

What is your Love Lingo? How does this affect your relationships with close friends and family? Leave your comment below. I would LOVE to hear what you think.

I love your article and I am not sure what my love lingo is because I feel like I have components of all.
Service and affirmation does resonate high though. I plan to get the book.

HI Judy! I thought I responed to you awhile ago, BUT thanks so much for your input. Did you get the book? I actually thought I had them all, too, but after delving deeper, I am totally Quality of Time. Keep me posted, chica!

I love your article and will definitely read the book. Not sure what my lingo is because I feel that I have components of all. Although service, quality time and affirmations resonate the highest for me.

I think Kevin is too. Although with a hint of Physical Touch. 🙂 I guess that is good, huh?! Carolyn, I can totally see Ray’s love lingo. I think you are Gifts. What do you think? You always greet me with a kind note and thoughtful token. AND you never ever forget my b-day! I can always count on you to make me feel so important and loved. xo

Hannah, Did you get a chance to see how the Love Lingo related to you and your hubby? Thinking of you girlie!

OMG Lisa I love this! My language is SOOOO Words of Affirmation and my husband’s is Gifts. We sometimes misunderstand each other’s needs because we express things so differently. Never thought of it so clearly like this before!
