The Girl Effect: We can change EVERYTHING
“We have a situation on our hands…”
We can change EVERYTHING.
This video, every single time I watch it, makes me cry. These tears are a mix of sadness, disbelief, and hope. I tell you…every time.
Did you know that girls living in poverty are capable of creating a life of their dreams?
Did you know that when a girl is 12 years old she hits a crossroad where she can go one way or the other. The road can be uplifting and joyful. OR devastating. The sad part is that she has little or no control while in poverty. Most of the time it is devastating. Married by the age of 14. Pregnant by 15. At risk for HIV. This is IF she survives childbirth.
I guess this just hits home for me not only as a woman, but also since I’m a mom. Kate is 8 years old. She is very happy, healthy, and has the world at her feet. I often think about how lucky she is to have a safe environment to grow, learn, and flourish as a child.
Kate is learning how to read and write, do math and science (which she LOVES by the way), and dream BIG. She wants to own her own accessories fashion line which will donate proceeds to underprivileged kids so they can go to school, too.
Damn. What a girl. So that makes me think. What can I do to turn things around for girls around the world?
Enter The Girl Effect.
Why should we pay attention to girls?
Watch this video to find out about The Girl Effect.
Little research has been done to understand how investments in girls impacts economic growth and the health and well-being of communities. Girls have been overlooked.
For millions of girls across the developing world, there are no systems to record their birth, citizenship or even their identity. However, the existing research suggests their impact can reach much further than expected.

Hi,
I’ll donate $10. My friend started a running club for girls at bates, I’ll share this with het and maybe they can do a fundraiser.
Sandy
This is FANTASTIC, Sandy! AND let me know more about that running group. I would love to help if they do a fundraiser. Thank you, Sandy!
Ok Lisa, it’s done. Great cause. Thank you for bringing it to me today. MWAH!!!
That’s why I just LOVE you, girl. Thank you so much! I’ll give you a great big squeeze tonight at the open house.:)
Great Post Lisa – I truly believe women have the power to change the world if we work together. This was confirmed for me this weekend when I was watching various NFL games this weekend and I saw the players & coaches wearing pink in honor of breast cancer month. MONTH – not day, but month. And it was everywhere. I thought to myself, “Women made that happen (the awareness).” It was awesome. I’m going to do more research into the girl effect, thanks so much for sharing.
Amen, Deb! What a great way to point out how women can make a HUGE difference in the world. We can change the world! Causes like The Girl Effect is so close to my heart…thanks for your support and message.
Donated Girl! This is HUGE. My church in Federal Hill is supporting just this type of thing in Nicaragua! This is such a generational issue. Thanks for touching on this!
Oh, thank you, thank you!!!! This means so much to have your support. What is the cause your church supports? How wonderful, Elizabeth. Love to you!
Great Post, Lisa! Thank you for calling attention to such an important cause. We are so fortunate our daughters have the lives they do. I’ll donate as well.
Grazie, my friend! Our girls have such great lives, and I have to remind myself of that. Thanks for your support with The Girl Effect…means the world!
Love that you blogged about this Lisa. What an amazing cause, those videos are so inspiring. We take so much for granted… Thanks lady for posting this and for reminding me that I can and should do more.
Oh, Liz, my sweet friend, thank you so much! When I saw the call out for it, I just had to do it…I’m so dedicated to my sister in the Congo that I support through Women for Women Intl. and the Girl Effects even tugs at my heart more because I know that if we all come together to help, we can really change things.
Lisa,
You had me at “We…”.
I think of my Laura and I cry for those who are not as fortunate. I donated and will tell others to do so as well. Thanks for supporting this cause.
Ha! Love it! I totally get it…each time I watch the video, Kate pops up in my mind. In fact, she watched it with me the other day, and since she is old enough to understand a bit, she said she was determined to help other girls so they are safe and can be in school. Thanks so much for donating! You’re the best!
Love it Lisa! So glad that you’re sharing this message and thank you for giving so much! xo
Thank you, my love! xo
As usual Lisa, your posts are ‘right on the money’ and so relevant! My brother shared this video with me a few weeks ago and I was amazed by it then and still am now (probably b/c I have a mother’s heart too!). Besides appreciating the content of the video and furthering my awareness of this extreme issue, I was also amazed by the creativity of the people behind the making of the video… what an effective way to educate people about this issue and cause. Way to motivate us women today! =)
Oh, Katie! I can’t wait to see you at our next consult to give you a huge hug! I completely agree about the video…I love how they didn’t have someone speaking…just reading the powerful words on the screen. Plus the images…so excited that you are joining me for this cause. 🙂
Oh! Forgot to mention I donated! Hope to spend some more quality time with you in a future power session =) But if I’m not a lucky winner, then that still was certainly a donation well worth it.
Yay! Thanks so very much for donating! I’m hoping to raise $100 today. You are a rock star!!! I’ll announce the 3 winners tonight! Crossing my fingers.:)
What a great idea! I love that you put this out there so that we would know about it. I sent in my donation and put it on Facebook too, in hopes that maybe someone else will see it too. Thanks for all you do! You’re amazing! Love you! -Ann 🙂
Ann! I miss you so much! Thanks for donating and sharing! You are such a wonderful friend! I love you, Ann! Tons!
