Flush Out Smoothie

ow are you hangin’ during all the holiday craziness? Kevin and I braved the mall yesterday… luckily we had our green smoothies to keep us going. (Maybe wine would work too! Ha! It was a bit nuts!) I’ve been thinking about you. As we approach the last day of Green Up, I want to touch on next steps. Even though the holiday week is upon us, we can still continue adding something green each day. You might want to begin adding a spinach salad to the mix or throwing in collards for a soup. Possibly you will stick with making smoothies because you’ve gotten the hang of the process, and you are just lovin’ how you feel. You can even begin to add two greens to the smoothies instead of one. Maybe try the ratio of 3:1 (3 veggies to 1 fruit) for a few smoothies. Just promise me that you will keep up with all the amazing smoothie magic as much as you can. The main thing I want you to remember is to just try one easy green thing each day. By now, if you were consistent with your green smoothies, you’ve noticed a few changes such as feeling lighter, less stressed, nourished, satisfied for hours, not craving sweets as much, etc… As we ease into the finish line, I wanted to chat a bit about balance and how our dark leafy greens play a big role. The chlorophyll and phytonutrients from the dark leafy greens are so important to help get us back to balance in our cells so we can minimize inflammation.

The greens added to our smoothies can sure help with balance. Ahhhh, balance. You are told to strive for balance in your life. In my opinion, that’s pretty difficult to accomplish. There are so many outside sources that can get you out of whack with life: new job, moving, marriage, trips, environmental toxins…the list is endless. You can’t control every single thing in your life. You can, however, control what you put into your body andhow you deal with stress. Let’s call it a RE-BALANCE. Your body is always striving for balance to keep you in optimum health, physically, mentally and emotionally. Even things like the changing seasons, nature and being around other people can move you away from the balance your body craves. Physically, your blood needs to be at a pH level of 7.365. Have you ever heard of acidity and alkalinity? Maybe in a biology class way back? I don’t want to go into a big science lesson. What I first want you to know is something extremely important—your body loves you. Your body works hard to keep you alive. With that love in mind, it is valuable to know that your body becomes more acidic over time due to consuming a lot of caffeine, sugar and processed foods, as well as exposure to environmental toxins like pesticides, and most of all stress. The acidity leads to inflammation. Inflammation leads to chronic disease. Not good. We don’t want any of that. That’s why the chlorophyll and phytonutrients from the dark leafy greens are so important to help get us back to balance in our cells.

For today’s drink, we add chard for our leafy green boost.  AND for a nice after-party flush (lots of celebrating going on!); today we add broccoli, avocado and apple. Yahoo! Let’s make Flush Out!
